Bitches Book Club

About the Bitches Book Club

So we’ve gotten a few questions about our Bitches Book Club and we even felt the need to suss out some of the things that we’re thinking for this book club. In general, the book club was started by Nikki because:

“At the end of May I was feeling sort of “meh” about the Goodreads book clubs I’m part of. No offence meant to them at all! I like them. But they’re just so BIG that the books I’m particularly interested in don’t often (read: ever?) get picked and there doesn’t feel like there’s enough incentive to take part sometimes. I wanted something that was smaller so, even if I’m not super jazzed about every single book, I feel motivated to read each one because I knew the other member(s) of the book club are reading too and because of the discussion that will ensue.

SO, of course, I voice messaged Claire about it and we decided on a book within the hour!

How it works is that one of us will pick the book one month and the other will pick the book for the next month.”

How does it work?

Every month Nikki or Claire chooses a book to read and forces the other to read it. That’s it in a nutshell.

We take turns (every other month) choosing a book and try to write a review of the book before the end of the month (read: that doesn’t always happen but we aim to read and write a review of it in the last Monday or Wednesday of the month).

Can I join in?

This book club isn’t meant as an exclusive thing, it started out of frustration and boredom, looking for recommendations. So we’d love it if you wanted to join in. If you wanted to just read it and join us in a Comment discussion, you can do that. If you want to write a review then omgoodness please send it along and we’ll publish it up here with our review! We’d link back to your blog or whatever page you wanted as well!

We publish the next month’s pick at the bottom of the current Bitches Book Club review post. We also mention the next month’s pick in our monthly review post as well!

If you have recommendations you want to submit we’d be super chuffed if you’d Tweet Nikki or Claire with the pick or just email Claire or comment or really, whatever magical way floats your fancy. We looooooooooove book recommendations!

Are there any rules?

Well, when we choose books we try to look at a few guidelines or fulfil a few musts. The Bitches Book Club has evolved into a focus on increasing our reading diversity as such we try to suggest:

  • Books written by or about women/nonbinary/nongenderconforming individuals.
  • Books written by or about class or economically diverse individuals.
  • Books written by or about POC individuals.
  • Books written by or about characters from non-Western settings.

We’re not saying that these are hard and fast rules but we try to choose books that will examine at least one of the four areas above. The Bitches Book Club picks are also not genre specific, so it could be a fantasy novel, HF, memoir, NF, travelogue, murder mystery, YA, romance, etc. For instance, Claire tends to pick books within fantasy.

Nikki’s Addendum: I would also say we’re steering away from books that are by straight white dudes… OBVIOUSLY many(!!) of those authors have lots of interesting things to say and different perspectives depending on their experiences but, certainly for me (and I know for a lot of other people too) that’s pretty much status quo and not particularly challenging even if they’re sometimes writing about characters who aren’t straight white dudes. They aren’t ruled out altogether, but the point of the book club is diversity. It’s not about excluding those authors, but more about clearing a space to listen to stories from other authors/perspectives that normally don’t get as much attention or publicity.

Also, this isn’t a requirement but we like it if the books are 300 pages or less just so the pressure isn’t heaped on slow readers!!

Again this isn’t a book challenge but an ongoing book club engagement thing we have going on. So if you want to participate or pick a few books, just shout out 🙂

    • Nicole says:

Ooh! I’d like to hear what you think! Have you read any Okorafor or other African authors before?

      • imyril says:

I’ve read Okorafor’s Binti and some non-SFF African authors; I’m looking forward to reading Okorafor long-form – I liked lots of aspects of Binti without loving it, but I often find short form a bit frustrating unless the scope of the story is really tight.

        • Nicole says:

I just listened to the Binti audiobook today at work! Weird coincidence.
I agree; Binti had some interesting pieces, but as a whole it didn’t bowl me over. I’m not sure if it’s the format or not for me but, of all her work that I’ve read so far, Akata Witch (long form/novel) is my favourite. I see hardly any African writers in SFF so, while I think she has some kinks to work out in her writing still, I am interested to see where she takes things.

Great! YAY for read alongs! Do email me your ideas if you want them to show up on the main blog entry :3 (Claire@bitcheswithbooks.com) so happy to have you here!

I’m running a little late – if it’s not too late, I’ll email you some thoughts tonight or tomorrow, but I have a feeling I’ll have missed the boat (in which case I’ll contribute in comments 🙂
