Something Borrowed + Something New: October 2015

Obsessed

Now, it’s called Something Borrowed + Something New because I’m an active book borrower and I occasionally buy bookish items. So each month what I’ll so is share either a bookish selfie or discuss something bookish that I’ve borrowed and bought! It won’t always be a book, it might be a cool bookmark I bought or a cheap little tote. I have more shots of books + my British travels on my Instagram.

Borrowed

The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan

I borrowed this from the local library and it’s a pretty good one that I’m excited about (the library in addition to the book). I have a few friends from grad school that liked this and I will admit I was sort of peer-pressured into borrowing it. I haven’t started reading it yet but I think it will be a good one, reviews are good and though it appears a tad dense and thick, it might be a good NF read during the tube ride to work.

Additionally, I haven’t been able to find out the designer for this cover but it’s quite good. It’s simple and yet very beautiful and visually captivating. I have issue with NF covers at times, they are either huge shots of the author or quite dull stock images with a horrible font (so much Times New Roman, so not necessary!).

New

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix

I purchased this box set quite recently as a treat to myself. I adore this series and anything the author has written really. Nikki and I did a review recently of Sabriel where we recount our undying love for the series but not its many book covers. I made sure that I purposely bought a set that had the old edition covers from the 90s and early 2000s, as I am really not fond of the new ones. I was so excited when they came! They’re pocket-sized and thick and wonderful. I love the illustrations on the covers (the one in the image is the cover for Sabriel) and it’ll be fun to reread the series in this format (I read the series first via ebook) and I plan to do that the minute January 2016 comes. Yay! I also have Toothless on top making sure that the evil Toffee (the owner’s cat where I live) doesn’t upend my books- she likes to swat things but hates Toothless, so they’re quite safe with my dragon guarding my precious hoard. Mwuahahah!

  1. Aaaaagh I love Sabriel. I’ve been meaning to re-read the series for a while, but sadly my copies are at my parents’ house.

And yes, old cover art = best cover art. I wish they’d released a version of Clariel (which I still have yet to read) with the old cover art, too.
