(Nikki) All I Want For Christmas

Last Christmas with Claire was a blast! I’m gonna miss her and her sweet little red (non-Santa)* hat this year ;_;

*It actually had nothing to do with holidays at all. It was just a Claire thing.

In the spirit of Christmas times spent hangin’ out with Claire, I’m also writing up a bookish wishlist.

I feel like this probably already says a lot about me before I even begin to talk about the books: art, feminism, a dash of science and some off-kilter fiction. But to go in and illuminate a few bits of what you’re looking at in this collage:

A Series of Unfortunate Events (Complete Audiobook Collection) by Lemony Snicket

Oooooh boy, you guys! I think my Goodreads review of book 2 pretty much says it all. I just need to find a reasonably priced copy of this CD collection… Or I may just download the audiobooks (Overdrive or iTunes??) for £65 *wallet bursts into flames*

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

This is my favourite book, yet I do not own a copy. The reasons why are stupid. Suffice it to say, I’m seeking to rectify. Most BNW covers just seem sort of…well, I really don’t like them. But I think this Huxley painting cover is gorgeous.

I am woman. Hear me roar.

The Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce

A friend said she thought I’d like this series and I think I probably will so I’ve been looking for it but it seems reeeally difficult to get hold of in the UK. ugh! Might have to get request my bookstore (or library?) order it in. (I have a feeling Claire might like this series too, but don’t want to recommend it until I have actually read it and had my suspicions confirmed!)

And Greg Pizzoli’s bookish buttons are must-have reading-love declarations, of course!

    Aw those buttons are really adorable! And Whores and Other Feminists sounds super interesting – I’ve also heard a lot (as in a LOT) of praise for Roxanne Gray’s Bad Feminist.

    The f-bombs just keep dropping, especially with news to do off with feminism. Even in class we tried naming Feminism as something else (because men and women need to be equal, and apparently the name gives off the notion that women need to be equal TO men and men should just keep on doing whatever it is they’re doing because, hey, they’re the superior ones) and decided on genderism. Which is already a founded idea that states that being male and female is not part of a spectrum. You can only be male. And you can only be female. And you can only have characteristics that are assigned to each sex. How weird. :S (and what a total flop of trying to make the word Feminism more diplomatic – is that conforming but in a different way?)

    A girl in class also made an interesting point about how putting people on a spectrum (instead of just macho guys and giggly girls) was just another way to express genderism – you’re still judging people on how “masculine” and “feminine” their characteristics are and placing them on a spectrum of “masculine” characteristics and “feminine” characteristics is just saying that part of being a girl is having feminine characters: that if a guy adopts feminine characteristics they’re “like a girl” and if a woman adopts masculine characteristics they’re “like a guy” which defeats the principle.

      Thanks so much for commenting. And with such insightful stuff too! This is super interesting(!) – particularly the thoughts about the gender spectrum. I agree it doesn’t tackle the labelling which will still happen as people try to stick people on that spectrum (see: Kinsey test, which….somehow I failed!?? HOW? I don’t….know.. I think I just misunderstood a few questions hah….). That said, I also feel like the concept of gender is probably more accurately described as a spectrum rather than just two different camps*…it just happens not to matter where other people fall on that spectrum: let them do what they do ’cause it has nothing to do with anyone else…unless you are romantically involved, right? hah
      *I wanted to make the comparison to neurosis which I think should also be viewed as a spectrum, but I don’t at all like the propensity for comparing non-conventional/traditional sexuality choices to what is considered (arguably incorrectly) “mental illness“….hmm.. It should equally be seen as less taboo, though.

      With regards to the name “feminism”, personally, I like calling it that. The negative associations with the label sort of derail the argument a bit to me… So I kind of think it makes more sense (or maybe it’s just lazier?) to just cut the faff and reclaim that title proudly: FEMINISM! And then dive into insightful discussion and inclusivity! haha

      I super love those buttons! They’d probably make great stocking stuffers…….BUT I WANT THEM ALL FOR MYSELF! :’) So cute ❤
