#BookADayUK 21: One where I fell in love with the narrator

Fell in love with the narrator? I’m going to have to dig deep into my brain for this one… I’d have to say Arya Stark from A Song of Ice and Fire series was one of my favourite narrators so far. Does she count as a narrator though? Or just a POV character?

Most protagonists I’ve “fallen in love” with aren’t the narrators of their stories (Bernard Marx, R.E. Psmith (the “P” is silent), Lord Peter Wimsey, Philip Lombard).* And I think this sometimes more easily facilitates falling for them because you often see a more rounded view of them more clearly this way (though not always). In fact, I think most narrators I’ve read are the default ‘omnipresent non-character’ so this is going to be a little difficult…

*Thinking about it, that’s basically a list of smart, cheeky dudes who are critical of the conventional and maybe uncover mysteries to varying degrees…hmm…Maybe I have a ‘type’! And, based on that, I can only assume I’ll probably love Sherlock Holmes. haha

But I think I’m going to go with Kimberly Keiko Cameron a.k.a. Skim (from the graphic novel Skim). She knows herself and she doesn’t. She’s strong but also very sensitive. She’s perceptive and also vulnerable. She is so real and you can’t help but fall for her.

  1. Arya is also one of my favorite characters from ASOIAF. She is so fierce and brave, especially for her age. I’m not sure I could do most of the things she manages to pull off so far (I’ve read the books as far as the TV show goes)
