#BookADayUK 12: Favourite bookseller recommendation

I’ve read the entire Percy Jackson series and enjoyed it immensely. I can’t quite work myself up to read the Roman gods adventures, because I don’t know or trust them to have the sparkle of the Percy Jackson books. However, I ended up buying a whole swatch of copies because I pay quite a bit of attention to the Waterstones Book of the Month stuff, and I was prompted to purchase physical copies of this series (I had read it from copies from friends before). Here is a synopsis:

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school… again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’ master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

I can’t recall ever really taking any recommendations from any bookseller… The only thing that comes to mind is maybe Twilight which I saw an advert for in a girly magazine (which I assume was put there by a bookseller?!) and I’m not even sure why but I decided to check it out. I read it when I was its target audience (14 or 15?) and I really loved it at the time and I explained on Goodreads why I can never really bash it despite knowing its flaws.*

*But I’m happy to acknowledge those flaws!…just not bash it for them.

  1. I never get recommendations from booksellers, but I was pushed to read Percy and the first book wasn’t so bad 😀 I disliked Twilight a lot, but I would never bash it. I think it’s great so many people got back into reading because of it.

Yeah I had to resort to thinking of adverts I’d seen (which don’t REALLY count as recommendations I guess……but whatever!). Maybe we’re just a people who doesn’t look like we want/need recommendations! But I would appreciate if someone approached me at the till and was like “OH! You’re buying Lirael? Well let me recommend to you The Golem and the Jinni!” Or whatever…..Actually no. I think I’d feel put on the spot and like I couldn’t reject it if I didn’t think I’d like it….hmm……..!
Hahah, I don’t blame you in the least for disliking Twilight. It’s pretty ridonc… I think I liked silly teen romance because it’s a lot of dumb fun; everything’s so deliciously angsty. I also genuinely love vampires (proper ones, not Twilight ones…but I will give ALL vampires at least ONE chance). They’re just such a quintessentially Romantic creature*. I feel like I should try some Anne Rice and Sookie Stackhouse and Vampire Diaries/High School/Academy/whatever it’s called… It’s like my trash TV! :’)

*Actually I think they’re more a Gothic-era creature….though they probably pre-date that…I duno. They seem to come alive in the Romantic period, though. Amirite???

Blahblahblah! Nicole = sucker for (observing) suave broody bastards haha

I like the way you think Mel! I’m against people bashing others for what they read. As a person, if you dislike it fine, but don’t hate on those who like to read because of it.
